Release Oct 10, 2026: Barcode & QR Code Scanner Addons
Google Forms can't open a camera. Teams that track inventory, tickets, or assets end up typing codes by hand. CustomGForm v1.8.0 adds two addons that fix this.
What's New
Barcode scanner
Turn a Short Answer question into a barcode scanner. Choose which formats to accept: Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, and ITF.
QR code scanner
The same experience for QR codes: tickets, badges, asset labels, URLs.
Built for real-world use
- Native embed: no iframe and no app download for respondents.
- Manual fallback: respondents can type the code if the camera is denied or the code is unreadable. You can turn this off for locked-down workflows.
- Scan from a photo: decode a code from a saved picture when live scanning isn't possible.
- Feedback: success beep and vibration, both optional.
- Auto-submit: submit the form right after a successful scan for high-volume check-ins (single-page forms).
- Straight to Sheets: the scanned value is submitted as the normal answer, so it lands in your connected Google Sheet.
Zero cost for forms that don't use it
The decoder lives in a dynamically loaded addon asset (addons/scanner.js) that loads only when a respondent taps Scan. Browsers that support the native BarcodeDetector API skip the download entirely.
AI & MCP
Ask your AI assistant: "Turn the 'Asset tag' question into a barcode scanner with auto-submit." The configure_field_addon tool accepts addonType: 'barcode' or 'qr-code' and a scannerConfig.
